According to the Global Status Report On Road Safety published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2018, the number of road traffic deaths on the world’s roads stays unacceptably high. Although, the rates of deaths relative to the size of the global population has stabilized in the last years, the progress in reducing road fatalities differs greatly from country to country. Alarming 90% of global road deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, which have less than a half of the world's vehicles (International Transport Forum, 2019). Interestingly, even within western and high-income-countries the number of road fatalities varies significantly. As shown in the charts below and reinforced by the Vision Zero Network, the traffic fatality rate per 100.000 inhabitants in the USA, is two to four times higher than in other developed countries in Western and Northern Europe.
